The Nepal Ambulance Service was created by a group of committed volunteers. NAS’s volunteer pool includes a wide spectrum of Kathmandu professionals ranging from local physicians, educators, members of international non-governmental organizations, local businesses and hospital executives. As a non-profit organization, NAS relies on these individuals to contribute their expertise and energy.

Dr. Rajesh Gongal

President

Dr. Gongal is Dean of Patan Academy of Health Sciences and served as Medical Director of Patan Hospital from 2006 - 2009. Dr. Gongal is a consultant surgeon.

He is also the founding Chair of the first palliative care centre in Nepal called Hospice Nepal and has been working to expand awareness about the nature of palliative care.

He also is the founding Chair of Primary Trauma Care Nepal which has been successfully running trauma training courses across the country for doctors and paramedics since 2003.

 

Dr. Hikmat Bista

First Vice President

Dr. Bista earned his Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Anthropology and Ethno-linguistics from the School of Higher Studies in Social Sciences, Paris (France).

He has extensive experience in the fields of Local Governance and Decentralization. He has worked as a social scientist in the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and as Chief Advisor in Danish Support to the Decentralisation Programme (DASU/Danida)in Nepal.

Dr. Bista is currently serving as chairperson of the National Committee Local Governance Accountability Facility (LGAF).

 

Mr. Mukunda Malla

Second Vice President:

Mukunda Malla is CEO of SmartChoice Technologies Pvt. Ltd. SCT, as the company is popularly known, offers integrated shared services networks for Automated Teller machines (ATMs) and Point-of sale (POS) Terminals. Previously Mr. Malla was CEO of DHL Express in Nepal. He started his professional career as Cargo Officer in Air Express Pvt. Ltd - GSA of SAUDIA (Saudi Arabian Airlines).

Mukunda Malla is founding member of SAHAYOG "Saving Lives" – a social networking group comprising individuals from various walks of life. The group provides financial assistance to underprivileged heart patients at Sahid Gangalal Hospital.

Mr. Malla is also actively involved in promoting sports events within the corporate sector and is currently Vice President of Nepal Corporate Sports Association

 

Mr. Mahesh Nakarmi

General Secretary:

A civil engineer by training, Mahesh Nakarmi has made a career of helping national governments and international and national institutions prepare and respond to natural disasters and other mass casualty events. Mr. Nakarmi is also co-founder of the National Society for Earthquake Technology and founding member of Health Care Foundation Nepal and its National Kidney Center (NKC).

At NKC he pioneered a Healthcare Waste Management Program which has been singled out by the World Health Organization (WHO)as a model approach to the problems of medical waste in developing countries. Mr. Nakarmi is also a WHO Certified Mass Casualty Management Instructor.

 

Dr. Paras Acharya

Assistant Secretary:

Dr. Paras is Hospital Director of Patan Hospital. He is an internist with keen interest in emergency medicine working at Patan Hospital.

He is also the coordinator of a rural health promotion program dedicated to improving health care in remote areas of Lalitpur.

 

Mr. Bijaya Bahadur Mali

Treasurer:

Bijaya Mali is President of Chhatrapati Free Clinic. He is the creative force behind the transformation of the clinic from a humble first-aid center to a three-time nationally recognized comm unity-run, non-profit charitable day hospital for the underprivileged and the needy.

As founding member-secretary of Kathmandu Ward 17 Disaster Management Committee, Mr. Mali raised community awareness about earthquake related disasters and provided First-aid and search & rescue training to young volunteers

Mr. Mali is a former elected member of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Council and is active in community development work, the protection of heritage sites and use of clean energy

 

Mr. Om Rajbhandary

Member

Mr. Om Rajbhandary is Chairman and CEO of The Comfort Housing Pvt. Ltd, a pioneer housing company which has recently been honored in New York City with the International Quality Summit Award presented by Business Initiative Directions.

Mr. Rajbhandary has also created other business concerns under the umbrella organization Comfort Group of Companies. Brihat Investments Pvt. Ltd. is its latest business venture. He also serves as third Vice President of Nepal Land & Housing Developers Association, an organization bringing together all land and housing developers in Nepal to create uniform building standards and uphold professional ethics.

Om Rajbhandary is one of the co-founders of Hospice Nepal, a first of its kind charity based palliative care centre in Nepal that provides care for terminally ill patients and creates public awareness about palliative care. He is also Member of the Executive Commttee of Ganesh Man Singh Academy, a forum for the exchange of ideas between intellectuals and various professionals throughout Nepal. Mr. Rajbhandary is a member of Rotary International.

 

Mr. Anand Bagaria

Member

Anand Bagaria is Director of Nimbus Business Group. The company is dedicated to providing high quality live-stock feed for farmers in Nepal and internationally. The Nimbus Business Group is also involved in solvent extraction and the production of packaging materials.

Mr. Bagaria is a dynamic leader of the Kathmandu business community and a pioneer in promoting corporate social responsibility.

 

Dr. Ram Krishna Dulal

Member

Dr. Ram Krishna Dulal is a public health professional who earned his PhD and MBA/hospital management in Germany and MSPH in Thailand. Dr. Dulal served at Bir Hospital 13 years. He was also one of the core founders of Health Care Foundation-Nepal and served until joining the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Oct 2008

Dr. Dulal was decorated with Nepal Medical Association Medical Trust Award, and the Nepal Vidhyabhusan Class “A” and Mahendra Vidhyabhusan Class “B” awards. He has more than two decades experience in the health care field in Nepal and abroad.

 

Mr. Ranjit Archarya

Member

Ranjit Acharya started his working career early founding Prisma Advertising in 1991, at the age of 21. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of Nepal’s most aggressively growing creative advertising agency Prisma Advertising. With a team of 50 young professionals the agency has won many national advertising awards including BEST AGENCY OF THE YEAR for past four consecutive years.

He recently managed a national PEACE campaign for the Asia Foundation-USAID, which has been instrumental in bringing conflict resolution to afflicted areas of the country. Mr. Acharya is a member of Rotary International.

 

Mr. Sharada Bhakata Ranjit

Member

Sharada Bhakta Ranjit is Deputy Inspector General (Retired) of Nepal Police where he served nearly 28 years. He is well conversant with security and risk management issues including security planning and monitoring. Having served as a senior police officer during Nepal’s decade long insurgency, he also has considerable first hand experience with armed conflict.

Mr. Ranjit also has international field experience as a UN peace keeper deployed in Haiti and Afghanistan. He is currently working as a security advisor and consultant to a number of private firms in Kathmandu and is also active in a number of social service activities including the Community Police Service Group of Kalimati and as Vice President of Club 50.

 

Dr. Kulesh Thapa

Member

Currently Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police, Dr. Kulesh Thapa is a medical doctor affiliated with the Nepal Police Hospital for the last 23 years. His particular area of expertise is disaster management. Dr. Thapa also works as a trainer of pre-hospital emergency care and has extensive experience throughout South and South East Asia, and Africa working with UNDP and international NGOs.

Keshab Prasad Risal

CEO

Keshab Risal comes to the Nepal Ambulance Service from Nepal’s premier ad agency Prisma, where he served as General Manager for the last two years

Previously Mr. Risal worked with the Lutheran World Federation-Nepal, serving as Deputy Relief and Rehabilitation Coordinator of the Bhutanese Refugee Project

With a strong background in administration and management, Mr. Risal brings more than 30 years of experience to the challenges facing NAS during its crucial start-up and establishment phases.
